TPCASTT Poem Analysis Method:
Title:
The title symbolizes the death of the boy. It is said in casual words because the death of the boy did not affect many people, rather they continued to live their lives. Instead of putting sympathy into the title, the author chose to use a casual and careless title to foreshadow or symbolize the reaction of the other workers to the boy's death.
Paraphrase:
The first two lines are describing the action of the saw. It was making snarling noises and cutting pieces of wood that were dropping to the ground. About half way through the poem, when the author explains the scene of the saw cutting the boys hand off, the author gives the saw life by saying that it jumped at the sound of the word dinner and had no problem colliding with the boy's hand as it knew that it would win.
Connotation:
The part of the poem that talks about the boy doing man's work, but still a child at heart shows that no matter what age a person is, if they don't have a significant importance to other people, they will not care what happens to them. The last two lines shows the reality of the human race and that if something happens that does not directly affect them, then they do not care and won't pay attention to it, but as soon as it affects their lives they want to fully dive into the situation.
Attitude:
My attitude is sympathetic. I am surprised by the actions of these people, but also ashamed because every single human being does this no matter who they are. The characters attitude is obviously careless except for the boy who is dying who is shocked, scared, and confused. If I was dying and all of this was happening, I would not understand what was wrong with everyone and would be very upset. The authors attitude is also ashamed, but blunt. The author tells it how it is without sugar coating it.
Shift:
The shift in this poem is at the line that starts with "To tell them 'Supper'." Before this the poem is very calm and sharing the setting and the activity/tone of the day, but when the author writes this line, everything changes. There is now a suspense with the scene behind supper and then everything goes downhill from that moment. The shift goes from calm and refreshing to depressing and astonished.
Title:
I believe the title still has the same meaning. The title still represents the boys death and the lack of care for that death.
Theme:
The overall theme of this poem is to show the harsh reality of the human race. We are so caught up in our own lives and what is happening to us, that we forget to look into what is happening to other people and stop to care for more then a second. Many people see a car crash, but realize it isn't someone they know, so they continue on the road to the place that they have to be. Although this isn't as harsh of a situation, we do this with serious situations as well. Just like when our beautiful Bree died, we felt the sadness for a while and still do, but our lives have to move on and continue. Some know how to handle this situation in an appropriate manner, others not so much.
